China, Tanzania, and Zambia have signed an initial agreement to launch a major railway project that promises to reshape transportation infrastructure across East and Southern Africa.
The agreement, formalized during a high-level meeting held in Beijing, marks a pivotal step in the construction of the East African Rail Corridor.
The project is set to enhance trade and transport efficiency by linking the Tanzanian port of Dar es Salaam with Zambia’s mining regions, facilitating smoother and more cost-effective movement of goods and resources.
Under the terms of the agreement, China will provide the bulk of the financing and technical expertise for the project, leveraging its experience in large-scale infrastructure development.
Tanzania and Zambia will contribute to the project through land and logistical support, ensuring the integration of the new railway into their national transportation networks.
The railway is expected to span approximately 1,500 kilometers, stretching from Dar es Salaam to the Zambian border. It is anticipated to significantly reduce transit times for goods, from the current average of several weeks to just a few days.
This will be particularly beneficial for Zambia’s mining sector, which relies heavily on efficient transportation to export copper and other minerals.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, and Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema attended the signing ceremony, underscoring the importance of the project for their respective countries.
Xi Jinping highlighted the railway as a key component of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which aims to enhance global trade routes and infrastructure networks.
“Today’s agreement is not just a contract; it is a bridge that will connect our nations and our economies,” Xi Jinping remarked.
“Through this project, we are investing in the future prosperity of Tanzania, Zambia, and the entire region.”
President Samia Suluhu Hassan praised the agreement as a milestone in Tanzania’s development strategy, emphasizing its potential to transform Dar es Salaam into a major logistical hub and boost regional trade.
“This project is a testament to the strength of our partnership with China and Zambia. It will create jobs, spur economic growth, and position Tanzania as a key player in East Africa’s economic landscape.”
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema echoed these sentiments, noting the crucial role the railway will play in unlocking Zambia’s economic potential.
“This railway will not only facilitate the efficient export of our minerals but will also stimulate investment and development in the areas along its route. It is a game-changer for Zambia’s economy.”
The agreement also outlines a phased approach to construction, with the first phase expected to commence by early 2025. The project will involve extensive land preparation, track laying, and the construction of key facilities, including maintenance depots and freight stations.
While the railway promises significant economic benefits, there are challenges to address, including environmental concerns and the need for community engagement.
Stakeholders have pledged to work together to mitigate potential negative impacts and ensure the project delivers sustainable benefits.
As the East African Rail Corridor project progresses, it is anticipated to play a crucial role in enhancing regional integration and economic development, further cementing the growing economic ties between China, Tanzania, and Zambia.
