Protests erupt in Kenya’s Kakuma refugee camp over U.S. aid cuts

Widespread demonstrations shook the Kakuma refugee camp in northwestern Kenya on Monday, as protesters clashed with police over worsening food and water shortages.

Local media reported that officers fired live bullets in an attempt to disperse the crowds, though casualty numbers remain unclear.

Residents say conditions in the camp have deteriorated significantly, with many struggling to access basic necessities. The crisis has been exacerbated by recent cuts to humanitarian aid, following a reduction in funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

Aid groups have warned that the situation could worsen if alternative funding sources are not secured. Kakuma, one of Africa’s largest refugee camps, hosts over 200,000 people, primarily from South Sudan, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Authorities have yet to comment on the violence, but tensions remain high as refugees demand urgent action to restore essential services.
