Zuma’s attempt to dismiss arms deal prosecutor rejected

Former South African President Jacob Zuma’s attempt to fire the prosecutor in a corruption case against him was denied by a South African court.

Billy Downer, the state prosecutor, has been accused by Mr. Zuma’s defense team of being biased in the arms deal fraud investigation.

The Kwazulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg concluded on Wednesday that the former president had not proven that Mr. Downer’s ongoing role as his prosecutor would violate his right to a fair trial to begin with.

Mr. Zuma has attempted and failed twice to have Mr. Downer removed from the arms deal trial.

He attempted to contest the prosecutor’s removal in court in May 2021, but was unsuccessful.

In a case that has taken years to resolve, Mr. Zuma is accused of corruption in relation to a multibillion-dollar arms transaction. The former president has resisted the prosecution’s attempts to bring him on trial. (BBC)
