Zimbabwe receives fertilizer, wheat donations from Russia

The Russian government has contributed 250,000 tons of wheat to Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa, while the Uralchem-Uralkali group of Russian firms has donated 23,000 tons of fertilizer.

According to Nikolai Krasilnikov, Russia’s ambassador to Zimbabwe, the grain supply is “humanitarian assistance” on Wednesday.

“Both deliveries were carried out in line with the implementation of the initiative of the President of the Russian Federation Vladmir Putin to provide assistance to African countries,” Mr Krasilnikov added.

Russia unveiled a free grain delivery initiative to nations in Africa last year.

The program includes coverage of Burkina Faso, Mali, Eritrea, Somalia, and the Central African Republic in addition to Zimbabwe.

The assistance coincides with food shortages in Zimbabwe and many other southern African nations brought on by a protracted drought linked to the El Niño weather phenomena.

El Niño modifies weather patterns, causing droughts or an abundance of precipitation.

In January, the UN World Food Programme reported that 2.7 million people in rural Zimbabwe needed food assistance. (BBC)
