The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase, has called on Nigerians to seek for peace and unity among themselves to promote sustainable growth and development of the country.
Wase’s call was contained in a message commemorating Nigeria’s 60 independence anniversary and signed by his chief press secretary, Umar Muhammad Puma.
According to the Deputy Speaker, with unity, Nigeria’s diversity is a potential tool to enhance massive development which could in turn make the nation the envy of its peers globally.
He said Nigeria can surmount its current problem if th citizens are united, adding that the country needs more unity now more than ever.
He said: “As we celebrate the nations 60 independence anniversary today, I wish to congratulate all of us for witnessing this epoch making event. It is a thing of joy that in spite of all the challenges we have gone through, the nation is still one and we are part of this celebration.
“I wish to use this occasion to urge all Nigerians irrespective of sectional, ethnic, religious and whatever colouration to unite for the purposes of making this country a great nation.
“There is strength in numbers and God has blessed our nation with abundant human and natural resources. It is left for us to unite and harness our togetherness for the good of our people and the nation”
The Deputy Speaker also said that at this time, “Nigerians should think more of the things that unite us and less of those vices that tend to divide us.”
According to him, “we can be better off together than as a divided people.”
He, therefore, advised those who are not happy with current developments to use the avenue of the forthcoming constitution review by the National Assembly to express their grievances rather than calling for division.
“The National Assembly will soon commence the process of reviewing and amending the constitution. I, therefore, call on those with ideas on how to make Nigeria better to furnish us with such proposals so that the outcome of the exercise would benefit all of us”, he stated.
