Sri Lanka minister blames monkey for nationwide power outage

A nationwide power outage in Sri Lanka has been attributed to a monkey that intruded into a power station south of the capital, Colombo, causing a major system imbalance.

Power is gradually being restored across the island nation of 22 million people, with critical services such as medical facilities and water purification plants receiving priority.

“A monkey has come in contact with our grid transformer, causing an imbalance in the system,” Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody told reporters.

The blackout began at approximately 11:00 local time (05:30 GMT) on Sunday, leaving millions without electricity and forcing many businesses and households to rely on generators. Officials estimate that full power restoration may take a few hours.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of the country’s power infrastructure, with authorities now looking into measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
