The ruling African National Congress (ANC) in South Africa has lost a trademark lawsuit against the recently established uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party.
The African National Congress (ANC) demanded that the party, supported by former President Jacob Zuma, stop using a name and logo that were identical to that of uMkhonto weSizwe, the governing party’s defunct military arm.
In the forthcoming May polls, the ruling party contended that voter confusion would result from the upstart party using the same name.
The MK party can now continue its campaign ahead of the general election scheduled for next month after a Durban court on Monday rejected the African National Congress’ motion.
Jabulani Khumalo, a co-founder, claimed that the party had “conquered” soon after the court decision.
“Right now our biggest focus is on campaigning and promoting Zuma,” Mr Khumalo added.
