Soldiers destroy bandit hideouts in Taraba

Troops from the 6 Brigade, Sector 3, under Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have successfully dismantled several bandit hideouts in Taraba State, recovering arms and ammunition in the process.

The announcement was made in a statement on Sunday by Capt. Olubodunde Oni, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, in Jalingo.

The operation, led by Brig. Gen. Kingsley Uwa, Commander of the Brigade, targeted multiple locations identified as hubs of bandit activity. The mission aimed to disrupt criminal networks and restore peace to the affected areas.

While specific details of the arms and ammunition recovered were not disclosed, the statement emphasized the military’s commitment to neutralizing threats and ensuring the safety of residents in the region.

“The operation, code-named OP GOLDEN PEACE, was launched after extensive patrols, clearance missions, and consultations with key stakeholders, yielding significant results in the northern part of the state,” the statement revealed.

The latest phase of the operation, which began on Nov. 28, focused on Takum Local Government Area, particularly known hideouts such as Lijam High Ground.

During the mission, troops reportedly dismantled bandit camps and recovered several items, including 27 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, an AK-47 magazine, a handheld Baofeng radio, and two motorcycles.

“To further ensure the safety of residents, troops extended operations to the Akume and Ananum areas in Donga Local Government Area on Nov. 30, reinforcing their commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state,” the statement added.

Brig. Gen. Uwa commended the troops for their efforts and urged them to maintain their vigilance.

“Together, we will ensure peace and security across Taraba State and beyond,” the commander was quoted as saying.

He emphasized the importance of these operations in creating a secure environment during the ongoing harvest season and the upcoming festive period.

“This is our determined effort to ensure that Taraba does not become a sanctuary for criminal elements,” he added.
