Senate declares Edo gov Okpebholo’s seat vacant

The Senate has formally declared the Edo Central Senatorial seat vacant following the election and swearing-in of Monday Okpebholo as Governor of Edo State in November 2024.

During its plenary session on Wednesday, the Senate urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize a bye-election to fill the position.

Okpebholo, who previously served as the representative for Edo Central in the Senate, vacated the seat upon assuming the governorship, necessitating the selection of a new senator to represent the district in the National Assembly.

The call for a bye-election underscores the Senate’s commitment to ensuring that all constituencies have adequate representation in the legislature. INEC is expected to announce a timeline for the election in the coming weeks.
