Santorini on alert as earthquakes shake Greek island

Greek authorities have reassured the public that the recent minor earthquakes in Santorini are due to tectonic plate movements rather than volcanic activity.

Officials stated on Monday that seismic activity in the island’s caldera— the volcanic basin surrounding Santorini—remains in decline, easing fears of an imminent eruption.

Despite the tremors being classified as minor or light by geologists, authorities have implemented precautionary measures. In addition to school closures on Santorini, schools have also been shut on the nearby islands of Anafi, Ios, and Amorgos.

Authorities have advised people to avoid abandoned buildings and areas prone to landslides. Ships have also been instructed to steer clear of the ports of Ammoudi and Fira as a safety measure.

The Old Port of Fira, a popular docking point for cruise ships, remains operational, though large vessels have been asked to exercise caution.

While seismic activity in the region continues to be closely monitored, experts have emphasized that there is no immediate cause for alarm.
