Reps condemn attack on Kogi prison, seek improved security at custodial centers

The House of Representatives has condemned the attack on the Custodial Center in Kabba, Kogi State by gunmen.

The gunmen during the attack on the Kabba Custodial Centre on Monday morning, had killed two security personnel and freed about 240 inmates.

The chairman of the House Committee on Reformatory Institutions, Rt Hon Anayo Edwin, in statement, on Monday,decried the spate of attacks on correctional centers, in various parts of the country.

Edwin noted that it is regrettable that most of the attacks, like the one in Kabba, led to the escape of inmates serving various jail term. Consequently, he charged security agencies to intensify efforts to rearrest inmates, who escaped from the Kabba Custodial Center.

According to him, the escape of inmates from custodial centers has grave national security implications, as some of the escapees are usually hardened criminals, who have either been sentenced or awaiting trial.

The lawmaker, while commiserating with the families of security personnel, who lost their lives during the attack, called on the Nigerian Correctional Service(NCS) to collaborate with other security agencies to beef up security across the various correctional centers.

Edwin added that the House will interface with the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) on how to put a stop to attacks on custodial centers nationwide.
