Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has clarified the purpose of his visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Speaking to journalists after a private meeting that lasted over two hours at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Atiku described the visit as a “courtesy call.”
According to Atiku, the meeting was not politically motivated but simply a gesture of respect and goodwill towards his former boss.
Observers had speculated about the visit’s political undertone, considering the evolving dynamics within Nigeria’s political landscape. However, Atiku’s statement sought to dispel such assumptions.
“I was not in Abeokuta to see Obasanjo because of 2027,” Atiku stated. “It is a courtesy visit. I’m not going to talk about 2027 or politics. I’m not here because of 2027.”
Atiku has earlier in the day arrived at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta around 12:36 p.m. He was accompanied by political figures, including former governors Liyel Imoke (Cross River) and Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), as well as Oyewole Fasawe, a known close associate of Obasanjo.
Upon arrival, Atiku proceeded to the Penthouse section of the library, where he met privately with Obasanjo.
