The Presidency has responded to comments made by Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, clarifying that President Bola Tinubu signed both peace accords leading up to the 2023 presidential election.
Bishop Kukah, speaking at the Edo Election Townhall meeting in Benin, claimed that Tinubu had not signed the peace accord before the elections.
Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, dismissed the claim in a statement shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account.
Onanuga explained that Tinubu committed to both peace accords aimed at ensuring peaceful and credible elections.
“The first accord, focusing on free and credible elections, was signed on September 29, 2022, with Vice President Kashim Shettima representing Tinubu,” Onanuga said.
He further added that the second accord, meant to secure candidates’ agreement to accept election results, was signed by Tinubu himself on February 23, 2023.
This clarification emphasizes President Tinubu’s dedication to the democratic process and peaceful elections during the 2023 political season.
