The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has announced that the Nigeria Police Force will begin strict enforcement of third-party vehicle insurance for all motorists nationwide from February 1, 2025.
This declaration was made during a meeting in Abuja on Friday with Mr. Olusegun Omosehin, the Commissioner for Insurance at the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM).
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, released a statement detailing the announcement.
Egbetokun stressed the legal requirement for third-party insurance, citing Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act. These laws mandate all vehicle owners to secure third-party insurance before driving on public roads.
He warned that non-compliance would attract penalties, including fines, imprisonment, or both. The IGP also reassured Nigerians of the police force’s collaboration with stakeholders to ensure compliance while enhancing road safety and security for all citizens.
In his remarks, Omosehin commended the IGP for his achievements, particularly the establishment of the Police Insurance Bank Ltd. He emphasized the importance of enforcing third-party insurance, noting that it provides critical protection and benefits for road users in case of accidents.
