Due to accusations of extortion, special constables Kareem Fatai and Jimoh Lukman were fired by the Oyo State Police Command on Thursday.
Commissioner of Police Adebola Hamzat briefed reporters at the command’s headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, stating that the constables were shown in a widely shared video begging for money from a Dutch tourist named Ms. Noraly Schoenmaker.
The incident happened on October 23, 2023, along Moniya-Iseyin Road.
Hamzat said that the dismissed constables deliberately defied numerous orders and directives against professional misconduct, extortion, lack of civility, and corruption.
“We have always been warning against extortion. We have been alerting everyone that this administration has zero tolerance for corruption. That is the stand of the Inspector General of Police and my stand as the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State,” he said.
The Commissioner of Police stated emphatically that “we don’t condone corruption and don’t want the Command to be given a bad name.”
