Police arrest councillor, village chiefs over transformer theft in Gombe

In a startling development, the Gombe State Police Command has arrested a councillor and three village chiefs in connection with the theft of an electricity transformer.

The police spokesperson, Buhari Abdullahi, presented the suspects in Gombe on Monday.

The arrested councillor, Abdullahi Panda, represents Kumo East ward in Akko Local Government Area. The other suspects include Muhammad Majidadi, 40, the village head of Garin Majidadi; Muhammed Sani, 43, of the Sarkin Yaki quarters in Kumo; and Bello Ardo Kumo, 59, a traditional titleholders.

On June 21, 2024, police detectives from the Akko Division, acting on credible intelligence, intercepted the stolen transformer from Garin Majidadi village. The transformer was reportedly sold to Bello Ardo Kumo for N1.5 million.

In addition to this case, over 20 other suspects were arrested for various offences, including homicide, armed robbery, and other crimes. The police spokesperson emphasized the importance of intelligence-led policing in curbing criminal activities in the state.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Hayatu Usman, urged all peace-loving people of Gombe State to continue cooperating with the police and report any suspicious movement of people or items to the nearest police formation in the state,” Abdullahi stated.

The police continue to call for public cooperation to enhance security and ensure that criminal elements have no place to operate within the state.
