
A tragic road accident on Saturday in the Kwanan Maciji area of Pankshin Local Government Area, Plateau State, has left 19 people dead and 11 others injured.
The victims, who were returning from a wedding ceremony, had traveled from Kano State to Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State, for the event.
Their journey took a devastating turn as they opted for a shorter route through Gindiri to Bauchi State, which ended in the fatal crash.
Local authorities report that the victims were traveling in a heavily loaded vehicle when the incident occurred.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene to provide medical assistance and transport the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.
John Dasar, Chairman of the Pankshin Local Government Area Emergency Management Committee, confirmed the incident, describing it as a harrowing tragedy. He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, calling for improved road safety measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
“In the aftermath of the crash, bystanders were helping to evacuate passengers from the vehicle when it suddenly caught fire,” Dasar said. “Unfortunately, 19 of the occupants were trapped and burnt beyond recognition. The driver and a few others managed to survive.”
The 11 survivors, some with serious injuries, were rushed to the Pankshin General Hospital for treatment.
