Opposition observers have expressed their displeasure over what they claim are anomalies in the current round of voting in Chad’s presidential election.
At a polling place in the capital’s 7th district, N’Djamena, an opposition Transformers’ Party election observer questioned voting procedures and vote paper records.
“The number of registered voters here is 226… But ANGE [the electoral body], only submitted 156 ballot papers. Where are the remaining 70 ballot papers?”, Gauthier Saldnba said, adding “there’s a problem here.”
Election official Kaigo Patcha, however, insisted that “we have already called those in charge, and they’ll soon bring the remaining ballot papers,” claiming that there was actually a shortage of ballots and not malicious intent.
There have also been reports of certain electoral officials preventing certain voters from casting their votes. Voting in capital polling places was prohibited for anyone who registered to vote in areas other than N’Djamena. This was justified by election authorities, who claimed they were abiding by the electoral code.
By May 21st, preliminary results from the first round should be available. (BBC)
