Niger govt announces mass housing project to address accommodation needs

Niger State Governor, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, has unveiled plans to launch a comprehensive mass housing project aimed at providing affordable and adequate housing for workers and citizens in the state.

During a meeting with the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) at the Niger State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, Farmer Bago outlined the state’s 30-year development plan, which focuses on agriculture and housing as key priorities.

He expressed confidence that the new housing layouts will significantly bridge the existing housing gap in Niger State.

The Governor emphasized that the construction of more houses is a critical component of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. His administration intends to create 100 farm estates, with a target of building 100,000 houses to accommodate the growing population.

Additionally, he mentioned that Niger State, which covers 75 percent of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has identified 64,000 plots of land for development under this housing initiative.

Farmer Umaru Bago also highlighted the state’s collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and other development partners to establish new settlements and close all internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in the state.

Dr. Armstrong Takang, CEO of MOFI, lauded the Governor’s leadership, noting that the partnership between Niger State and MOFI, which manages federal investment and assets, is poised to yield positive results. He expressed optimism about the potential for investment in agriculture and housing, with MOFI playing a role in providing affordable housing options through low-interest mortgages.

Sani Yakubu, MOFI’s Executive Director, affirmed that the current administration’s renewed energy will help scale up housing efforts, addressing the challenge of unaffordable housing. He also mentioned that the MOFI real estate fund is designed to assist in making housing more accessible.

In a related discussion, Sammy Adigun, Chairman of Niger Foods, stated that the partnership with MOFI aims to support President Tinubu’s proposal of producing 2 million tons of food for the federal government.

He expressed confidence that the collaboration will significantly contribute to Niger State’s role in achieving the country’s food sovereignty goals.
