
The Nasarawa State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), said it has seized no fewer than 4,257.831 kilograms of illicit drugs and apprehended 102 suspected drug pendllers from June 2022 to June 2923 across the 13 local government areas of the state.
Mr. Peter Odaudu, Commander of the agency in the state disclosed this at the ground finale of the United Nations International Day Against drug abuse and illicit trafficking in Lafia on Monday.
Those drugs seized is made up of about 4,152.755kg of cannabis sativa, popularly referred to as wee-wee, 84.065kg of sundry psychotropic substances, largely tramadol and diazepam, 20.245kg of cough syrup with codeine, 0.699kg of methamphetamine, and 0.017kg of cocaine.
The Gazette TV reports that from June last year to the end of May this year, a total of 53 conviction were secured with varying jail term, nothing that more cases are ongoing at various stages of trial.
Nine clients were rehabilitated in the command’s facility in the past one year and 397 suspects and users, 18 of who were females were given brief counselling intervention, without necessarily taking them into custody.
The Gazete TV further reports that this year’s theme, “People First. Stop stigma and discrimination, strengthen Prevention” apparently seeks to bring to the fore the need for love and care to be showed those involved in drug abuse, who in our perception are sick people.
