Due to deteriorating security, the medical nonprofit Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has evacuated its personnel from the sole operational large hospital located in the central Gezira state of Sudan.
The only hospital in operation in the state is Madani Teaching Hospital, which is situated in Wad Madani, the capital of Gezira state.
Since April 2023, the paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has occupied Wad Madani and been at war with Sudan’s regular army.
“This extremely difficult decision comes after more than three months of relentless challenges trying to provide care at the hospital, including the growing insecurity; the inability to bring new staff and medical supplies into the area due to the denial of travel permits,” MSF said in a statement.
It further stated that “hundreds of thousands of people in dire need of medical assistance” in Wad Madani were receiving care from the facility.
“Stop violating health facilities and guarantee the safety of medical personnel and grant the necessary travel permits for our staff and supplies,” the humanitarian organization pleaded with the army and RSF. (BBC)
