Mother, toddler perish in tragic Abuja fire

A devastating fire has claimed the lives of 24-year-old Jumai Sunday and her one-and-a-half-year-old son, Nasir Rabiu, in the Kugbo area of Abuja.

The incident occurred late on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, while the mother and child were asleep in their residence located in the Municipal Area Council (AMAC) of the Federal Capital Territory.

According to reports, the fire completely engulfed their home, leaving behind charred remains. Neighbors discovered the victims after firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze.

Jumai and Nasir, originally from Eggon Local Government Area in Nasarawa State, lived in the Kugbo furniture market area, a bustling commercial zone.

Speaking to reporters, Lakur Langyi, the police officer in charge of the Karu division, confirmed the incident.

“We received distress calls at midnight on Wednesday, and our officers immediately responded,” he said.

“When we arrived, we discovered the woman, Jumai Sunday, and her one-and-a-half-year-old son had perished in the fire.”

Langyi mentioned that the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but investigations are ongoing.

“The source of the fire is still unclear, but our team is currently in the area conducting inquiries,” he said.

The remains of the mother and son have since been laid to rest in the Kugbo cemetery, located along the Abuja-Nyanya-Keffi Expressway.
