In a significant operation, the Niger State Police Command has recovered fifteen pump action rifles from suspected gunrunners in Minna.
The recovery was announced by the State Commissioner of Police, CP Shawulu Ebenezer Danmamman, during a press briefing at the police headquarters in Dutsen-Kura Minna on Wednesday, August 7, 2024.
The operation unfolded on August 4, 2024, when police operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Minna intercepted a red Toyota Corolla with registration number DKA 877 HJ along the Maikunkele-Tegina road in Minna. The vehicle had three occupants, including the driver.
During the routine stop, the officers began questioning the occupants, but the situation took a surprising turn. Under the pretext of needing to relieve themselves, the three suspects fled the scene. Upon searching the abandoned vehicle, officers discovered fifteen automatic pump action rifles and thirty cartridges concealed in a sack.
CP Danmamman assured the public that the police are making concerted efforts to track down the owner of the vehicle and apprehend the fleeing suspects. “However, concerted effort is ongoing through investigative process to track the owner of the said vehicle and arrest the fleeing culprits towards unraveling the source and purpose of the pump action rifles, and prosecution. The case is under investigation in SCID Minna,” he stated.
This successful recovery underscores the ongoing efforts of the Niger State Police Command to combat illegal arms trafficking and enhance security in the region. The investigation is ongoing, and the police remain committed to bringing the culprits to justice.
