Man electrocuted while attempting to vandalize PHCN transformer in Lagos

A heartbreaking incident occurred on September 1, 2024, in Ikoyi, Lagos, where an unidentified man tragically lost his life while attempting to vandalize a transformer on Awolowo Road.

The transformer, owned by the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), became the scene of a fatal accident in the early hours of the morning.

According to reports from the Lagos State Police Command, the event unfolded at approximately 4:02 AM when a security guard from a nearby company spotted the man climbing a gate close to the transformer.

Suspecting foul play, it soon became clear that the man was attempting to tamper with or vandalize the high-voltage equipment.

In a devastating turn of events, the man made contact with the live electrical installation, resulting in his immediate electrocution.

The force of the electrocution caused the man to fall into the nearby compound, where he was later found dead. The Lagos Police were promptly notified, and an Anti-Crime Patrol team was dispatched to the scene to assess the situation and begin an investigation.

SP Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the incident and reiterated the serious dangers of tampering with electrical installations.

He urged the public to steer clear of such illegal and dangerous activities, highlighting the severe consequences they can carry.

Authorities have since transported the body to a mortuary as efforts continue to identify the deceased and notify his family.

The police have also reached out to the PHCN office as part of the ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to prevent future tragedies of this nature.
