Man arrested for allegedly killing mother for rituals in Cross River

A 29-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing his mother for ritual purposes in Cross River State.

SP Irene Ugbo, the state police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest in Calabar on Friday. The horrifying incident reportedly occurred on December 25, 2024, in Batriko, Eastern Boki Local Government Area.

According to sources, the arrest was made possible through a joint operation by the police and the Obudu council’s security team. Authorities launched a manhunt after discovering the woman’s body dumped in a well in Obudu Local Government Area.

The suspect was apprehended alongside a native doctor, with whom he had been hiding. During the arrest, investigators allegedly found a bag containing the shaved hair of the deceased, adding to the grim details of the case.

“As I speak with you, the suspect and the native doctor are presently cooling off at the Obudu Divisional Police Headquarters,” said a source familiar with the case.

It was gathered that the suspect allegedly shaved his mother’s hair before disposing of her body in the well. Both he and the native doctor are now in police custody as investigations continue.
