Major highway severed as Australian flood crisis deepens

Authorities in Australia are scrambling to assist isolated communities in Queensland after severe flooding forced thousands to evacuate, cut power to homes, and washed away key infrastructure, including parts of a major highway.

The deluge has already claimed one life, with a woman found dead in floodwaters as towns across the state’s north, including Townsville, Ingham, and Cardwell, face widespread devastation. Emergency services are conducting rescue operations as torrential rains continue to threaten communities.

“We are dealing with a very dangerous situation,” Queensland Premier Steven Miles said.

“The focus is on keeping people safe, restoring essential services, and assessing the full extent of the damage.”

Thousands remain without power, and authorities have warned of further disruptions as rivers and dams exceed capacity. The Bruce Highway, a critical transport route, has been severely damaged, hampering relief efforts.

Meteorologists warn that more rainfall is expected in the coming days, exacerbating the crisis. The federal government has pledged emergency funding and additional resources to aid the recovery process.

Residents are urged to follow evacuation orders and remain vigilant as emergency services continue their work in the flood-stricken region.
