Liverpool manager Arne Slot has emphasized the importance of resting key players over maintaining their position at the top of the Champions League group standings.
Ahead of Wednesday’s clash against PSV Eindhoven, captain Virgil van Dijk, star forward Mohamed Salah, and goalkeeper Alisson have all been excluded from the lineup, along with at least six other regular starters.
With Liverpool already securing a spot in the Champions League Round of 16, Slot sees the match as an opportunity to rest key players and give fringe players a chance to prove their worth. “It’s a chance to manage player workload and prepare for a demanding schedule,” Slot stated during a news conference.
Liverpool currently sits atop the Premier League standings and remains active in both the FA Cup and League Cup, underscoring the need for strategic squad rotation. Despite winning all seven of their group-stage matches so far, Slot expressed little concern about being overtaken by Barcelona if PSV triumphs.
