In a significant political gathering, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, joined several National and State House of Assembly members for a stakeholders meeting in Umuahia, Abia State.
The event, organized by Governor Alex Otti, took place at the Banquet Hall of the Abia State Government House on Wednesday.
Despite the importance of the meeting, it was notably boycotted by the LP’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, who had expressed opposition to the gathering.
However, Governor Otti, his Deputy Ikechuckwu Emetu, and prominent party figures like Senator Victor Umeh, Obi Aguocha, and several State Assembly members were present to support the event.
Former Imo State governorship candidate Athan Achonu and other former LP governorship candidates also attended.
During the meeting, a significant decision was made to appoint former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, as the Chairperson of a 29-member Caretaker Committee.
The committee is tasked with steering the Labour Party’s affairs and leading it to electoral success. Darlington Nwokocha was also appointed as the committee’s Secretary.
While details from the meeting remain limited, Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Otti, described the event as a major success for the Labour Party amidst ongoing internal party dynamics.
