A violent confrontation between crop farmers and cattle herders in Jahun Local Government Area, Jigawa State, has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 10 lives, with several others sustaining injuries.
The incident occurred in the Gidan Nagari community, just two kilometers from Gululu, where a similar confrontation had claimed nine lives earlier. In the previous clash, tensions escalated after farmers accused herders of looting a provision store in the Miga Local Government Area.
Haruna Mairiga, the head of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), confirmed the latest death toll during his visit to the affected area on Friday morning.
“The dead consisted of nine males and an eight-year-old girl, all from the peasant farmers’ community,” Mr. Mairiga said.
During the midnight raid, the attackers reportedly set houses ablaze and opened fire on fleeing residents.
Efforts to reach the state police spokesperson, Lawan Adam, for comments were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
