House of Reps order investigation into Abuja earth tremors

In response to the recent earth tremors in Abuja, the Nigerian House of Representatives has taken immediate action, instructing the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to conduct a thorough assessment of potential hazards and implement swift safety measures.

This decision follows an urgent motion presented by House Minority Leader, Rep. Kingsley Chinda, during Wednesday’s plenary session.

Chinda called for an in-depth investigation into the unusual seismic activities experienced in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), referencing media reports and concerns raised by residents, particularly in the Mpape area.

Chinda emphasized the critical role of the FCT as a symbol of Nigeria’s stability and expressed concern over the absence of conclusive explanations for the tremors.

He highlighted the growing fears among residents that these tremors could signal the possibility of more severe seismic events, which may result in significant damage to the city’s infrastructure.

While the FCT is not typically known for seismic activity, Chinda acknowledged that some regions within the territory have experienced tremors related to climatic changes in the past. This history underscores the need for proactive steps to prevent potential disasters.

The House expressed particular concern about the impact on critical infrastructure such as office buildings, roads, and public facilities. Any significant damage to these assets could result in loss of life, displacement of residents, and substantial economic consequences.

To address these issues, the House has directed its Committees on the Federal Capital Territory, Environment, and Emergency Disaster Preparedness to investigate the cause of the tremors and recommend necessary legislative actions to safeguard the capital from future seismic threats.
