Gov Bago restricts heavy duty trucks on Dikko bridge, visits scene of tanker explosion

The Niger State Government has issued a new directive restricting vehicles coming from the Maje axis from passing through the Dikko Bridge.

In a statement issued by Bologi Ibrahim,
Chief Press Secretary
to the Governor, stated that, this decision follows the tragic tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area, which claimed several lives.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, during his visit to the scene of the explosion, expressed deep concern over the recklessness of some drivers, which he described as a contributing factor to such incidents.

He mandated that vehicles from the Maje axis should no longer use the bridge but instead take a U-turn under the bridge to ensure safety.

To enforce this directive, the governor urged the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to establish a permanent detachment in the area. He also called on relevant transport unions to collaborate with the FRSC in implementing the new traffic guidelines.

The governor described the explosion as a “pathetic tragedy” but expressed gratitude that it did not spread to nearby communities.

He further emphasized the need for swift action from the Federal Government to complete the Minna-Suleja road project, citing its delay as a major factor contributing to frequent accidents and loss of lives in the region.

Governor Bago also commended the prompt response of various agencies, including the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), in evacuating victims and managing the aftermath of the incident.

In a bid to support the injured victims receiving treatment at Suleja General Hospital, the governor announced that doctors from Minna hospitals would be redeployed to assist in their care.
