Ghanaian deacon kidnapped in South Africa released

The high commissioner of Ghana to South Africa has announced the release of the Ghanaian deacon who was kidnapped on Sunday during a church service in Johannesburg, the country’s capital.

The deacon, identified by the Ghanaian media as Elder Emmanuel Cudjoe, was taken hostage after a group of armed men broke into the Church of Pentecost and demanded goods from the members while holding guns.

The deacon, whose identity High Commissioner Charles Owiredu withheld, was set free on Tuesday night and was now with his family, he announced on X, formerly Twitter.

He withheld information regarding the cleric’s release.

In South Africa, there has been a recent wave of robberies at temples, mosques, and churches.

In a nation where crime is among the highest in the world, the government has pledged to take action to protect worshippers.
