In a significant move towards enhancing road safety across Nigeria, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a new mobile app and the National Crash Reporting Information System (NACRIS).
The innovative tools are designed to tackle the rising incidence of road traffic crashes and other safety-related issues nationwide.
Speaking at the launch event held in Abuja on Thursday, Sen. George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), hailed the initiative as a milestone in the FRSC’s history.
He highlighted that the corps’ embrace of digital transformation is a critical step towards streamlining its operations, improving road safety administration, and fulfilling its mandate to the public.
Akume emphasized that both the mobile app and NACRIS would play pivotal roles in raising awareness among drivers and passengers about the causes of road accidents.
“The launch is a testament to the FRSC Corps Marshal’s dedication to keeping his promises and executing policies that promote a safer motoring environment,” he said.
He also shared alarming data on road traffic incidents, revealing that between January and December 2023, 5,081 Nigerians lost their lives in crashes, with 31,874 others sustaining injuries.
In the first half of 2024 alone, 2,776 people have been killed, and 16,309 injured due to road accidents.
The SGF praised the FRSC’s management for aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which focuses on digital transformation and economic growth.
He assured the public that the Federal Government would continue to support the project to ensure its sustainability and benefit to all Nigerians.
FRSC Corps Marshal Malam Shehu Mohammed noted that the launch of the app and NACRIS aligns with the agency’s broader goal of improving road safety management.
He described the FRSC Mobile App as a tool that will provide real-time alerts and raise public awareness of sensitive road safety issues.
Meanwhile, NACRIS will offer a comprehensive platform for multi-sectoral crash reporting and data management, enabling more effective analysis and response to traffic incidents.
Chairman of the House Committee on FRSC, Rep. Abiodun Adesida, commended the Corps Marshal’s visionary leadership and expressed gratitude to the SGF for their continued support.
He explained that the modern platform would empower users with real-time updates on traffic, road conditions, and accident alerts, making roads safer for everyone.
The launch was attended by key stakeholders, including Mr. Isaac Parashina, Kenya’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, the Emir of Zazzau, Malam Nuhu Bamalli, and senior officials from the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN).
This digital transformation represents a new era for the FRSC, one that promises to improve road safety across Nigeria and save countless lives.
