Early life
Joseph Khalil Aoun hails from a family originally rooted in the southern Lebanese town of Al-Aaishiyah and was born on January 10, 1964, in Sin el-Fil, a suburb of Beirut in the Metn District.
The son of Hoda Ibrahim Makhlouta and Khalil Aoun, he grew up with strong ties to both his local community and his southern heritage.
Academic journey
Aoun completed his secondary education at the prestigious Collège des Frères Mont La Salle.
His academic journey continued at the Lebanese American University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Affairs in 2007.
Additionally, he holds a degree in Military Science from the Lebanese Army Military Academy, where his military career began in 1983.
Military career
Aoun joined the Lebanese army in 1983, embarking on a path that would see him rise through the ranks.
His training included stints abroad, notably in the United States and Syria. In 2008, he undertook counter-terrorism training in the U.S. and further honed his expertise with similar training in Lebanon in 2013.
