First group of people holding foreign passports cross Rafah terminal into Egypt

“The first group of people holding foreign passports will cross the Rafah terminal into Egypt on Wednesday,” an official from the authorities in charge of this border crossing with Gaza, which has been bombarded relentlessly by Israel since the start of the war with Hamas, told AFP.

Foreign chancelleries report that residents of the Gaza Strip, home to 2.4 million people, are under virtual siege due to Israel’s “complete siege” imposed after 16 years of blockade, and that citizens of 44 countries as well as 28 foreign agencies, organizations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are in the region.

81 wounded Palestinians were scheduled to be transferred to Egyptian hospitals on Wednesday, according to Egyptian and Palestinian officials. Wednesday morning in Rafah, on the Egyptian side, Egyptian television channels close to the intelligence services showed live footage of a line of ambulances entering the terminal.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, gave no further details on the number of foreigners involved or when they crossed.
