Early life
Femi Gbajabiamila is of Yoruba origin and was born on June 25, 1962 in Lagos State to Mr Lateef and Mrs Olufunke Gbajabiamila.
Personal life
He is a Muslim who is married to Salamatu Gbajabiamila, with whom he has two children.
Education
His primary schooling began at Mainland Preparatory School before transferring to Igbobi College in 1973, where he finished his secondary education.
After graduating from the University of Lagos with a law degree in 1983, he was called to the bar in 1984.
Femi went on to earn his Doctorate degree from Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School in Georgia, USA, where he also excelled in the Georgian bar test in 2001 and established a law company.
While in the United States, he was instrumental in the election of Bill Campbell, who eventually became Mayor of Atlanta.
As a law graduate, Femi worked for Bentley Edu & Co, a Lagos-based law company, before establishing his own firm, Femi Gbaja & Co.
Politics
Gbajabiamila was elected to represent Lagos State’s Surulere Constituency in 2003 on the platform of the now-defunct Alliance for Democracy, and he was re-elected in 2011.
In the 7th National Assembly, he was also the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives.
He chaired the House of Representatives’ ad hoc committee investigating claims by the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) over the 140.9 billion naira (approximately $1 billion) debt owing by ‘Zenon Petroleum & Gas Limited’ and ‘Forte Oil Plc’.
Gbajabiamila received 283 votes in the 9th National Assembly House of Representatives, while his opponent Mohammed Umar Bago received 78 votes.
He was recognized as a good legislator due to his attention and commitment to national issues.
After two decades in the legislative field, he resigned as a member of the House of Representatives on June 14, 2023, to become President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff.
Awards
President Muhammadu Buhari bestowed the Nigerian national title of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Femi Gbajabiamila in October 2022.
