Everton Football Club has parted ways with manager Sean Dyche, ending his tenure at Goodison Park after less than two years in charge.
The announcement comes just hours before the team’s FA Cup third-round match against League One side Peterborough United.
In a statement, Everton confirmed that Leighton Baines, the club’s under-18 head coach, and Seamus Coleman, the team captain, will temporarily take charge of the squad. The dismissal also saw the departure of four members of Dyche’s backroom staff: Ian Woan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard, and Billy Mercer.
The decision follows Everton’s recent struggles, including a 1-0 loss to Bournemouth on Saturday, which left the team in 16th place in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone.
The Toffees failed to register a single shot on target during the match and have won only three of their 19 league games this season.
Dyche took over from Frank Lampard on January 30, 2023, when Everton were in the relegation zone. His efforts helped the club narrowly avoid relegation that season with a decisive 1-0 win against Bournemouth on the final day. The following season, Dyche led Everton to a 15th-place finish, despite the team being docked eight points for financial rule breaches.
Though Everton’s defense has shown resilience this season with seven clean sheets, their attacking struggles have persisted, scoring just 15 goals – the second-lowest tally in the league, ahead of only bottom-placed Southampton.
This season marks Everton’s final campaign at their iconic Goodison Park home before moving to their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock. The club is also navigating a period of transition following last month’s £400 million takeover by the US-based Friedkin Group.
