To combat child trafficking and improve the lives of Almajiri children in Northern Nigeria, a European Union Anti-Trafficking Organisation in Nigeria has organised a one-day workshop, to counter the trafficking and exploitation of the Almajiri Child.
The workshop, which had in attendance critical stakeholders working for the good of the Almajiri child, was designed to address the complex issues, surrounding the Almajiri system, and its impact on child trafficking in Northern Nigeria, especially being trafficked for various dehumanizing activities like child soldiers, among others.
The anti-trafficking organization, with support from the European Union, Action Trafficking in Persons, and Smuggling of Migrants in Nigeria, A-TIPSOM, says due to the high rate of the trafficking of Almajiri children, both interstate and across the country, the need to reverse the trend has become necessary.
At a one-day workshop, the organization, through its technical advisor, Sani Bello, says it is collaborating with the Network of Civil Society Organisations, CSOs Against Trafficking and Child Labour, NACTAL, and the Almajiri Child Rights Initiative, ACRI, to counter the trafficking, and exploitation of the Almajiri child.
According to Bello, the workshop is expected to establish a forum, that will serve as a critical platform, for fostering collaboration among stakeholders and raising awareness within the community, all with the common objective of reforming behaviors’ and improving the conditions of Almajiri children.
On his part, the National President of the Network against Child Trafficking, Abuse and Labour, Abdulganiyu Abubakar, says they are working to safeguard the rights of the Almajiri child, with regards to the recent statistics, issued by the US Department of State, that Almajiri children have been trafficked for various dehumanizing activities.
A participant and Katsina lead for the Almajiri Child Rights Initiative, Baraqat Suleiman, they are working not only to stop the trafficking of the Almajiri child but to incorporate them into the Universal Basic Education, UBEC.
