Edo election: Police arrest political thugs, recover weapons

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested two political thugs during overnight raids in Edo State, as part of efforts to ensure a violence-free governorship election.

In a statement issued on Saturday morning by Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police confirmed the recovery of firearms from the suspects, identified as Edwin Obanor, 43, and Au Tajudeen, 41, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Ugbogbo Quarters, Igara Akoko, Edo.

The statement detailed:

“Acting on a tip-off, police operatives arrested Obanor, a leader of an armed group, at Oredo Ward 4 around 9 p.m., while Tajudeen was apprehended at Igara Akoko on the eve of the election. Upon searching their belongings, three cut-to-size locally fabricated pistols were found on Obanor, and one locally made gun was recovered from Tajudeen.”

Adejobi emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to ensuring law and order during the election, stating that the arrested individuals are now in custody and will face prosecution.

He reassured citizens of the police’s dedication to maintaining peace and urged the public to report any suspicious activities.

This operation highlights the ongoing efforts by security agencies to prevent electoral violence and ensure a peaceful voting process in Edo State.
