Adams Oshiomhole, the Edo North Senator, has ignited controversy with his recent remarks about Betsy Obaseki, the wife of Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, suggesting that she “has no child.”
The comments have drawn significant backlash and raised eyebrows within political circles.
The incident occurred during a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign event in Esan South-East LGA at Ubiaja Township Stadium.
During her address, Betsy Obaseki introduced Ifeyinwa Ighodalo, the wife of PDP governorship candidate Asue Ighodalo, emphasizing that he was the only candidate in the upcoming September 21 election with a spouse.
She encouraged the women present to support Ighodalo, framing it as a vote for women’s empowerment.
“Let’s campaign and vote for the best candidate in this forthcoming election. I want to introduce his wife. Incidentally, out of all the candidates contesting this election, only one has a wife,” Betsy stated.
In response, Oshiomhole expressed his astonishment at Betsy’s comments, particularly her claim that Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, does not have a wife.
He then controversially remarked about the Obaseki couple, asserting that they are childless and have not considered adoption.
“I was shocked yesterday to see Mrs. Obaseki, the first lady, saying our candidate has no wife. I’m sorry she had to say that because here is a woman who has no child. Between her and Obaseki, they are childless. They are not even ready to adopt,” Oshiomhole remarked during an interview with journalists.
Oshiomhole’s comments have sparked widespread criticism, with many calling them inappropriate and an unwarranted personal attack on Betsy Obaseki.
This incident highlights the increasingly heated political atmosphere in Edo State as the governorship election approaches, drawing attention to the personal and familial narratives that often intertwine with political campaigns.
