Dublin asylum seekers relocated from Grand Canal tents

The Irish government has announced that an effort to dismantle more than 100 tents erected by asylum seekers along Dublin’s Grand Canal has underway.

Relocating asylum seekers to alternative housing will occur.

Irish station RTÉ reports that barriers have been placed around the canal encampment and that numerous coaches were parked along the adjoining Mount Street this morning.

It follows the removal of tents and asylum seekers by Irish officials from the area outside the International Protection Office on Mount Street last week.

The Irish government released a statement stating that the departments of Integration and Justice, An Garda Síochána (police), Dublin City Council, Health Service Executive, and Waterways Ireland collaborated on the operation at the canal.

The “safe movement” of individuals from the tents to the accommodations will be guaranteed, the authorities promised.

The lodging also features showers and restrooms, health services, indoor dining places, phone charging stations, access to transportation to and from Dublin City Center, and round-the-clock security.

Since they were originally erected between the Huband and Mount Street bridges on Friday night, the number of tents on both sides of the Grand Canal has been gradually increasing. (BBC)
