The Department of State Services (DSS) has announced the redeployment of Peter Afunanya, its long-serving Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, as part of a routine service reshuffle.
Afunanya, who has been the public face of the DSS for over six years, made the announcement during a press briefing in Abuja.
Although he did not reveal his next posting, Afunanya explained that the redeployment is a standard procedure designed to boost operational efficiency within the DSS.
His role as spokesperson came at a crucial time when the agency was facing significant public perception challenges, stepping in after a period of uncertainty following the 2015 retirement of former spokesperson Marilyn Ogar.
Ogar was forced into retirement amid allegations of bribery and professional misconduct, which she has consistently denied.
Afunanya took over the role and worked to restore the agency’s public image during a time of heightened scrutiny.
Reflecting on his tenure, Afunanya expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in such a key capacity, reaffirming his dedication to the DSS and Nigeria.
“I will continue to serve with love, loyalty, honour, and glory,” he stated, promising to uphold his commitment in whatever future role he takes on.
His redeployment coincides with the recent appointment of Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi as the new Director-General of the DSS.
Ajayi, who was previously the DSS Director in Kogi State, took office last Thursday. In his first address, Ajayi emphasized the need to refocus the agency on covert operations, strategic silence, and tackling Nigeria’s economic, political, and security challenges.
As the DSS transitions under new leadership, Afunanya’s exit from the public relations role signals the end of a notable chapter in the agency’s public communication efforts.
His successor will face the task of maintaining the momentum Afunanya helped build as the DSS continues to address the complex national security landscape in Nigeria.
