Drug trafficking: Spaniard among 13 jailed in Ivory Coast

Thirteen individuals connected to a significant cocaine trafficking network were sentenced to ten years in jail by an Ivory Coast court.

Among them is a former police officer from Spain who was said to be the smuggling operation’s mastermind.

Two years ago, the port cities of Abidjan and San Pedro saw the seizure of over two tonnes of cocaine.

Each of the guilty parties was also mandated to pay a fine of about $100 million (£80 million).

Among them are a police commissioner and an Ivorian regional council member.

According to the public prosecutor, the inquiry revealed a substantial drug trafficking network that connects Ivory Coast, Europe, and South America.

The majority of the cocaine was supposed to be shipped to Australia, India, and Europe. (BBC)
