Death toll from Niger tanker explosion rises to 98

The death toll from the horrific tanker explosion in Dikko, Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, has climbed to 98, with 69 others left injured.

The tragic event occurred last Saturday when a fuel-laden tanker crashed and spilled its contents, leading to a catastrophic explosion that devastated the community.

According to Abdullahi Baba-Arah, the Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, the explosion happened during an attempt to transfer petrol from the damaged tanker to another.

The incident also destroyed over 20 shops, plunging the affected area into grief and economic hardship.

In response to the alarming frequency of tanker explosions in the country, President Bola Tinubu has established a high-level committee to investigate these incidents and propose actionable solutions.

Meanwhile, the Niger State government has called on the federal government to accelerate the Minna-Suleja road project, citing the road’s poor condition as a major factor in the recurring accidents.
