Cross River: Gunmen kidnap traditional ruler, kill aide

Gunmen kidnapped HRM Maurice Edet, the traditional head of Cross River’s Akpabuyo Local Government Area, on Sunday night at his home in the council district.

Reports state that during the several hours-long kidnapping, the traditional monarch’s advisor was shot and killed.

SP Irene Ugbo, the Police Public Relations Officer, Cross River State Police Command, acknowledged the incidence but stated the specifics of the kidnapping were unknown to her at the time of reporting this report.

A source who pleaded anonymity said that the traditional ruler’s aide was killed as he tried to resist the kidnappers from abducting his principal.

Akpabuyo is less than 15 kilometers from Calabar, the capital city of the state.

Meanwhile, Professor Patrick Egaga of the University of Calabar (Unical) has been released by his abductors after 26 days in captivity.

Egaga who is UNICAL’s Director of Servicom, was abducted in the institution’s Staff quarters after which his abducted demanded a ransom of N50 million. He was released on Saturday.(Vanguard)
