Justice Haruna Mshelia, a High Court judge in Borno State, has been freed by his kidnappers after being held captive since June 2024.
The judge was abducted on June 24 while traveling from Biu town to Maiduguri with his wife, driver, and police orderly.
The attack, suspected to have been carried out by Boko Haram militants, tragically resulted in the death of his police orderly between Buratai and Gujba village.
Mshelia’s release was confirmed on Saturday, with the news initially shared on a WhatsApp group for lawyers in Borno.
While the legal community expressed relief at his release, it was noted with concern that his wife and driver remain in captivity. A subsequent message urged continued prayers for their safe return.
Details surrounding the circumstances of Mshelia’s release remain unclear, as authorities have not confirmed whether a ransom was paid or if other conditions were met. The police have yet to provide additional information regarding the ongoing situation.
Mshelia has served as a High Court judge in Borno since May 2012 and was a private lawyer before his judicial appointment.
His abduction underscores the ongoing security crisis in Borno State, where Boko Haram has continued to launch violent attacks, causing widespread devastation, displacement, and loss of life across the region.
