Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists launched a deadly attack on a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in the Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State on January 4, 2025.
The assault targeted the Sabon Gari camp around 4 a.m., with the terrorists engaging Nigerian troops in a fierce battle that lasted for two hours.
Armed with an array of weapons, the insurgents overwhelmed the soldiers stationed at the base, resulting in significant casualties.
An unconfirmed number of troops were killed during the attack, while others are reported missing. The exact number of casualties and the extent of the damage remain unclear as investigations are ongoing.
“25 Taskforce Brigade was attacked during the weekend with so many casualties. So far, we have recovered over seven bodies,” a source told SaharaReporters.
The attackers reportedly burned several buildings and military operational vehicles during the raid.
This attack indicates ISWAP’s growing dominance in the Lake Chad region since the death of Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau.
The group has expanded its ranks with the defection of hundreds of Boko Haram fighters, increasing its operational capacity.
Despite the ongoing threat, the Nigerian Army has reiterated its commitment to eradicating terrorism in the country.
