Just days after a military base in Sabon Gari, Borno, was attacked, suspected Boko Haram insurgents have struck again, this time targeting the Nganzai Police Division in the early hours of January 9, 2025.
According to an official statement, the militants launched a grenade attack during their assault on the police facility. The raid, which began at approximately 12:10 AM, resulted in the deaths of two police officers as the attackers attempted to breach the division.
“Gallant officers who were on watch repelled the terrorists, after a series of exchanges in a gun battle. The terrorists threw hand grenades which, unfortunately, landed on a shelter tent behind the division, fatally wounding two officers,” the statement reads.
An assessment of the scene by the Commissioner of Police revealed that two hand grenades were recovered by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from Base 13 in Maiduguri. The bodies of the slain officers were subsequently transported to the State General Hospital in Maiduguri for post-mortem procedures.
The Commissioner of Police praised the bravery of the officers who defended the station and extended condolences to the families of the fallen officers.
“The Command remains dedicated and committed to ensuring the safety and security of all, and we call for calm as normalcy has been restored,” the statement concluded.
