In a shocking incident, several Muslim worshippers were abducted by suspected bandits during early morning (Subhi) prayers at a mosque in the Bushe community, Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed the attack, with its spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, providing details in a statement on Friday morning. He described the incident as a coordinated ambush that left the community in shock.
According to eyewitnesses, the bandits stormed the mosque in large numbers, disrupting prayers and forcibly taking worshippers into the surrounding forest. The exact number of abducted individuals is yet to be determined.
Security operatives have reportedly launched a search-and-rescue operation to apprehend the culprits and ensure the safe return of the victims.
“I just confirmed the incident from the DPO of the community when I spoke with him on the telephone,” Rufai said. “I want to assure you that the Nigeria Police, in conjunction with other security agencies, are working tirelessly to ensure the immediate release of all the abductees.”
According to reports, the attackers stormed the mosque in Bushe town at dawn on Thursday, seizing at least 10 individuals, including the Imam.
A local resident revealed that the ambush took place while worshippers were engaged in the early morning Subhi prayer.
The source also highlighted the community’s ongoing security challenges despite the presence of security personnel, including troops from Operation Fasan Yamma, under the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division headquarters.
Confirming the abduction, Sa’idu Ibrahim, a member of the Sokoto State House of Assembly representing the area, stated that at least 10 people were taken. He, however, praised the security forces for their swift response, which he said helped prevent further kidnappings.
