In a decisive security operation on Thursday, operatives of the Agunechemba Security Squad, in collaboration with local vigilante groups, apprehended nine suspects allegedly involved in kidnapping and ritual killings in Anambra State.
The raid, which targeted notorious criminal hideouts in Owere Zukala, Orumba South Local Government Area, was described as well-coordinated and intelligence-driven.
According to sources within the security outfit, the suspects had been under surveillance for a considerable period. Critical information provided by local residents played a pivotal role in the success of the operation.
The apprehended individuals are suspected of being part of a syndicate responsible for terrorizing the region with kidnappings and ritual activities. Weapons and other incriminating materials were reportedly recovered from the hideouts.
“Our team had been monitoring them for some time now, and the villagers have been helping us. So when we confirmed the information, we had to inform our colleagues at Awka and we all made preparations with our point men in the neighbouring towns, who also confirmed that those men do visit their towns,” the source disclosed.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the majority of the suspects had fled from Arondizuogu in Imo State after facing pressure from the Joint Task Force on Security. They reportedly crossed into Anambra to continue their criminal activities undetected.
Security forces recovered several items from the suspects, including motorcycles, power generators, and various arms. Among those arrested was the alleged gang leader, infamously known as “Fat One,” who is believed to have orchestrated numerous kidnapping operations across Anambra and Imo states.
Confirming the arrests, Prince Kenneth Emeakayi, Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, commended the efforts of the security team and reiterated the government’s commitment to eradicating criminal elements from the state.
“It is over for these criminals, and we shall leave no stone unturned to unmask these boys because we have resolved to free the entire Anambra State,” Emeakayi affirmed.
He further issued a stern warning to landlords and hospitality business owners:
“I want to once again warn house landlords and owners of hospitality businesses to be mindful of the kind of persons that stay in their houses or lodge in their hotels because if it is confirmed, we shall bring the building down in line with the laws of the state.”
The suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue to uncover more details about their network and operations.
